Our Practice Areas

Comprehensive, dedicated, and bilingual legal representation in Hauppauge, New York.

Serving our community since 2014

At Melgar Law Firm we provide personalized service in Spanish and English to the families and businesses of Long Island. We focus on three main areas of law. Below we explain what each one involves and what you can expect from us. Since 2014 our mission has been to empower members of our community by providing expert legal guidance, instilling confidence, and navigating them through complex legal matters with clarity and support. We do not just handle cases — we guide people through life-changing moments, with honesty, resourcefulness, teamwork, and a commitment to tangible results.

We help people injured in car and other motor-vehicle accidents on Long Island seek compensation from the party who caused the crash. Motor-vehicle accidents are the only type of personal injury case we handle: we do not take slip-and-fall, workplace injury, or medical malpractice cases. Your case review is free, you pay nothing unless we win, and if you are not sure whether you have a case, we investigate together with you until we find the fault that opens one.

Common questions about car accidents

What should you do right after a car accident?

Call the police at the time of the accident, then seek treatment right away: go to the hospital, a doctor's office, or physical therapy, even if you feel fine, so a doctor can check for injuries that are not obvious. Call a lawyer immediately after seeking treatment. The two most common mistakes we see are waiting too long to start legal action and not starting treatment, and both can hurt your case.

What evidence matters in a car accident case?

The evidence that matters most is the police report, pictures of your injuries and of the damage to the vehicles, any footage of the accident, and your medical records. If you have these documents, bring them to your first consultation; if you do not have them on hand, contact us anyway and we will guide you.

What if the insurance company offers you quick money?

Never accept it. Insurance companies reach out early and offer as little as possible so that you do not move forward with a claim. Before you sign or accept anything, let us review the offer and corroborate your injuries.

What can you claim, and how long does a case take?

You can seek compensation for the bodily injuries you sustained in that motor-vehicle accident. To determine what your case is worth, we analyze your injuries, how serious they are, how they could affect you in the future, and the collateral losses the accident caused.

Every case is different, and some have no set time frame. Some cases take up to 8 months, others 1 to 2 years, and some up to 3 years, depending on how serious your injuries are: for example, some people recover with physical therapy, while others need surgery or injections.

How much does it cost, and how do we fight for you?

You pay nothing at the start of your case, and we charge you only if we win. Our firm is fully dedicated to obtaining fair compensation for you: we thoroughly investigate each case, gather strong evidence, negotiate aggressively with the insurance companies, and, when necessary, take the case to court to protect your rights and pursue the maximum compensation available. Throughout the process you have direct access to your attorney, and we keep you informed by call, text, email, or WhatsApp.

We represent buyers and sellers of houses, buildings, and commercial property. We review the contract before you sign, check that the title is clean, guide you through the inspection and the negotiation, and represent you at the closing, so you understand exactly what you are signing.

Common questions about real estate

Closings, contracts, and property disputes in Suffolk County

A real estate contract is a serious legal commitment, and once it is signed it is hard to turn back, so have an attorney review it before you sign. We review and prepare the purchase and sale documents, check that the property's title is clean and help resolve liens, outstanding debts, or ownership disputes, go over the inspection results with you, and negotiate the terms. At the closing we represent you every step of the way: we verify that the figures and terms are correct, coordinate with the other parties involved, and make sure the transfer of the property is completed legally and safely, so there are no surprises.

We guide families and individuals through family petitions, adjustment of status (green cards), DACA, TPS, work permits, waivers, and U.S. citizenship. We do not handle deportation or removal defense cases.

Common questions about immigration

Family petitions, permanent residence, and naturalization

We prepare family petitions (Form I-130) so that citizens and permanent residents can petition for their family members, as well as applications for adjustment of status and permanent residence. For those who already meet the requirements, we handle naturalization (Form N-400) and explain each step of the process so you know what to expect.

We also handle DACA and TPS renewals, work permits, travel documents, waivers, removal of conditions on residence, and green card renewals. We know how stressful it is to face an immigration process, which is why we offer clear, honest guidance in your language at every stage of the case.

Our immigration services include family petitions (I-130), adjustment of status (I-485), DACA (I-821D), TPS renewals (I-821), work permits (I-765), travel documents (I-131), waivers (I-601, I-601A, and I-212), removal of conditions on residence (I-751), NACARA (I-881), green card renewal (I-90), citizenship (N-400), certificates of citizenship (N-600), visa extensions (I-539), and FOIA requests for immigration records (G-639). Whatever your matter, a designated member of our team follows your case, so it always has a clear owner.

Your first consultation, step by step

At your first consultation we give you a checklist of the documents your case requires and explain the process step by step, so you know exactly what to expect. Bring every document related to your matter: the most common mistakes clients make are not disclosing important information and not bringing the requested documents, and both cause delays. Getting legal advice before filing helps make sure the right documents are sent from the start.

If you are afraid to start an immigration process, know that the first step is simply seeking legal advice to understand your options. Once you know where you stand, fear can turn into a plan.
